KSB successfully reduced noise by 20 decibels for large pumps

With the newly developed noise damper, KSB Germany has successfully reduced the noise level of large pumps manufactured 21 years ago by 20 decibels. Before this innovation, these pumps were a significant source of noise pollution, disturbing nearby residents and affecting their quality of life. In response to a specific request from the operator, the pump was transported to Frankenthal, where KSB conducted thorough tests on hydraulics, vibration, and noise at their local testing facility. Based on the measurement data and existing design documentation, KSB’s hydraulic and acoustics experts collaborated to develop a new noise damper and optimize the pump’s impeller design. Utilizing "rapid prototyping" technology, the new noise damper was designed, manufactured, and installed in a fully inspected pump within just eight weeks. The trial run in Frankenthal demonstrated an impressive noise reduction of up to 20 decibels—surpassing the initial target of 15 decibels. This achievement not only met but exceeded expectations, showcasing KSB's commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility. The success of this project highlights how modern engineering solutions can effectively address long-standing issues, improving both performance and living conditions for communities affected by industrial equipment.
