KSB successfully reduced noise by 20 decibels for large pumps

With the newly developed noise damper, KSB Germany has successfully reduced the noise level of large pumps manufactured 21 years ago by an impressive 20 decibels. Before this innovation, the pumps had been causing significant noise pollution, disturbing the lives of nearby residents. In response to a specific request from the operator, the pump was transported to Frankenthal, where KSB conducted comprehensive tests on hydraulics, vibration, and noise at their local testing facility. Based on the measurement data and existing design documentation, KSB’s hydraulic and acoustic experts collaborated to design a new noise damper and optimize the pump’s impeller for better performance and quieter operation. Thanks to the use of "rapid prototyping" technology, the new noise damper was developed and completed within just eight weeks. It was then installed in a fully inspected and tested pump. During the trial run in Frankenthal, the results exceeded expectations—achieving a sound reduction of up to 20 decibels, surpassing the initially targeted 15-decibel improvement. This achievement not only demonstrates KSB’s commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction but also highlights their ability to modernize older equipment without compromising performance. The success of this project could serve as a model for similar upgrades across other aging industrial systems.
