China's current development trend of new packaging technology for paper products

Today, paper-based packaging remains the most widely used among the four major packaging materials and is considered one of the most promising green alternatives. However, the production of paper often leads to environmental pollution, requiring significant investment to address these issues effectively. Despite this challenge, the industry continues to innovate in order to meet the growing demand for sustainable solutions. In response, the carton industry is focusing on developing lightweight yet high-strength corrugated boxes with 3, 5, or 7 layers, suitable for both light and heavy-duty applications. These products are designed to meet the needs of electromechanical and home appliance industries. In addition, new printing technologies such as coated white kraft paper and low-cost flexible color plates, along with water-based inks, are being introduced to enhance product quality. The development of advanced equipment and accessories for producing high-quality plastic boxes is also underway, replacing traditional staples and improving the overall durability of the cartons. Innovations include fresh, water-resistant, antibacterial, and mildew-resistant fruit and vegetable crates, as well as corrugated trays. High-speed vacuum-adsorbing corrugated rolls are being developed to improve the efficiency and stability of carton machinery. Integrated and modular technologies for electromechanical use are also being explored, aiming for component standardization and reduced reliance on imported systems. For paper containers, fine corrugated production technology is being refined to support small-volume, multi-species manufacturing. Low-cost production methods for various paper-based packaging items like bags, boxes, cups, bowls, tubes, and barrels are being developed, with an emphasis on environmental compliance. Vacuum-spray aluminum transfer cardboard is being introduced as a more eco-friendly alternative to traditional gold card paper. High-speed, high-efficiency, and high-precision die-cutting equipment, especially circular die-cutting systems, are also under development. Honeycomb paperboard is another area of focus, with the goal of creating a high-flexible, efficient, and precise production line tailored for China’s market conditions. This will help overcome current bottlenecks that limit large-scale adoption. Research is also being done on low-cost honeycomb boards with moisture-proof, flame-retardant, anti-static, and anti-counterfeiting properties. Special attention is given to the safety and hygiene of anti-counterfeiting packaging, particularly for food and pharmaceutical products. Materials that come into direct contact with goods must meet strict health standards. In the field of pulp paste, new processes are being developed to increase the pass rate and reliability of molding, bringing production costs closer to those of EPS. Pulp molded product lines and molds that cater to small-batch, multi-species production are being designed. Technologies for directly using natural plant fibers like orange stalks for buffer packaging are also being explored, alongside advancements in biological bacteria, protein denaturation, and adhesive hot pressing. A standardized and modular design system for pulp-molded products is being developed to reduce costs, improve product quality, and create new growth opportunities in paper packaging.
