EU checks "market economy status" of Shanghai plastic bag companies

On August 25, European Union officials conducted on-site inspections at five Chinese companies, including Shanghai Side Housewares Co., Ltd., as part of an investigation into the "market economy status" of these enterprises. This move marks a significant step in the EU's ongoing anti-dumping probe against Chinese plastic bags. The investigation was launched by the EU on June 30, targeting plastic bag imports from China. A total of 115 Chinese companies responded to the inquiry, making it the largest-ever EU anti-dumping case against China. The EU has selected the top 10 exporting companies based on their volume and is conducting field verifications in two batches. The first batch included five companies from Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang provinces, with EU officials spending approximately two days at each site to gather detailed information. Currently, China is the EU’s largest supplier of plastic bags. According to Chinese data, the value of the goods involved in this case exceeds 310 million U.S. dollars. Last year, many Chinese plastic bag manufacturers faced high anti-dumping tariffs in similar cases, which significantly impacted their competitiveness. If they lose access to the EU market, thousands of small and medium-sized plastic bag producers in China could face severe financial difficulties, leading to potential job losses and economic instability in the sector. This investigation highlights the growing tensions between the EU and China over trade practices and underscores the importance of fair competition in international markets. As the process continues, both sides will closely monitor the outcomes, which could have long-term implications for trade relations and business strategies.
