Japan's Tungaloy has introduced a new round-end slot milling cutter model "BBB2000," featuring a cubic boron nitride (cBN) sintered body for the cutting edges, now available for sale. The front end of the tool is equipped with a hemispherical cutting edge made entirely from cBN, allowing it to directly cut hardened molds after quenching. This eliminates the need for a separate finishing process, streamlining production and improving efficiency. The price ranges from 25,200 to 260,250 yen, inclusive of tax. This innovative tool is specifically designed for processing molds used in injection molding of mobile phone resin casings. Traditionally, molds are machined while still "soft" using super-hard alloy slot milling cutters, followed by heat treatment to enhance wear resistance. However, this process often leads to minor dimensional errors due to thermal expansion, requiring a secondary finishing operation with another superhard alloy tool. The BBB2000 overcomes this issue by enabling direct machining of hardened molds right from the start. Without the need for post-cutting heat treatment, dimensional accuracy is maintained, eliminating the need for finishing and reducing both cost and lead time. Additionally, the tool can handle materials with a hardness of up to 70 HRC, making it ideal for high-wear applications. Another key feature is the enhanced precision of the cutting edge. By maintaining an R-edge accuracy of ±5 μm, the tool minimizes irregularities and ensures extremely small shape errors, resulting in high-precision cuts. This level of accuracy is especially beneficial for complex mold geometries where even minor deviations can affect product quality. Tungaloy has released four models of the BBB2000, each with different round head radii: R0.3 mm, R0.4 mm, R0.5 mm, and R1.0 mm. The shank diameter is standardized at 6 mm, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of machining equipment. This versatile line of tools is expected to become a game-changer in the mold manufacturing industry, offering improved efficiency, accuracy, and cost-effectiveness.
