France builds a diesel-electric submarine for India

The French Shipbuilding Bureau has started construction on the first of six "Scorpio" class diesel-electric submarines ordered by India. These submarines are designed for coastal defense and feature a displacement of 1,929 tons, a total length of 67 meters, and a maximum diving depth of 300 meters. Each vessel can accommodate a crew of 31 personnel and operate on snorkel for up to 45 days. In October of last year, India approved a $3 billion (2.4 billion euros) contract to acquire these advanced submarines, which were jointly designed by French and Spanish engineers. Although the final assembly will take place at an Indian shipyard, the French Shipbuilding Bureau will supply critical components that Indian facilities are unable to manufacture. Over the next eight years, approximately 200 French engineers and technicians will be involved in designing and producing key parts of the submarines. This collaboration marks a significant step in India's naval modernization efforts and highlights the growing strategic partnership between India and France in defense technology. The project is expected to boost local shipbuilding capabilities while ensuring high standards of performance and reliability in the submarines.
