Strong demand for heat treatment related equipment

In the heat treatment industry, which plays a vital role in the broader manufacturing sector, current market demands and trends are evolving rapidly. At a recent national heat treatment industry management meeting, Professor Fan Dongli, a renowned metal heat treatment expert and former vice chairman of the China Heat Treatment Industry Association, shared his insights on the state of the industry. He emphasized that as the manufacturing industry continues to grow, so does the demand for heat treatment services, with three major areas standing out. Firstly, heat treatment processing companies are expanding their operations. With China’s low-cost labor and production environment, foreign investment in manufacturing is not only concentrated in coastal regions but is also gradually moving inland. In addition to the automotive sector, many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across various industries rely heavily on collaborative processing. This trend has led to an increase in private heat treatment companies, especially in areas where SMEs are prevalent. The growing presence of foreign-owned heat treatment plants reflects this shift. Additionally, the high demand for light industrial molds, basic components, and automotive parts is driving the growth of the heat treatment processing industry. However, the current capacity in China is over-saturated, with equipment utilization rates averaging only 30%. Many state-owned enterprises operate with limited shifts, and after internal upgrades, they are more inclined to engage in external collaborations. This could lead to fierce competition among new and existing players, potentially affecting product quality and company reputation. As such, Professor Fan warned that new entrants must proceed with caution. Secondly, there is a strong demand for technological upgrades and equipment modernization. Industries like automotive, aerospace, defense, and mold manufacturing are pushing for advanced heat treatment technologies. Enterprises are no longer satisfied with outdated systems and are increasingly investing in high-tech, reliable, and automated equipment. Private companies, in particular, are focusing on efficient capital allocation, often prioritizing high-performance machines even if they come at a higher cost. This trend presents opportunities for equipment manufacturers, who need to keep pace with global developments and user needs. For instance, the demand for advanced furnaces—such as multi-furnace systems, mesh belt, push rod, and roller bar furnaces—is expected to remain strong. Vacuum heat treatment furnaces, especially those capable of high-pressure gas quenching, are seeing increased demand. By 2010, it is anticipated that over 300 units of high-pressure gas quenching furnaces will be required annually. Similarly, the use of natural gas for endothermic atmospheres is expected to rise significantly. Lastly, the market for heat treatment process materials remains substantial. Quenching agents, carburizing agents, and other auxiliary materials are essential for ensuring the quality of treated components. Although polymer-based media are sometimes promoted as replacements for oil, in practice, oil still holds a significant share due to its unique properties and reliability. Currently, 50% of quenching is done using water and salt solutions, 40% with oil, and only 5% with nitrate baths. Commercial quenching oils account for less than 10% of total usage, with annual demand reaching around 30,000 tons, of which only 3,000 tons are commercial-grade. Despite the promising outlook for the Chinese heat treatment industry, several challenges persist. These include uneven development among enterprises, low specialization levels, excessive energy consumption, outdated equipment, weak environmental awareness, and poor quality of industrial materials. Addressing these issues is crucial to support the continued growth of the manufacturing sector and the national economy.
