3D printing technology: development of the first surgical robot

Recently, Eric Barth, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Vanderbilt University and David Comber, a graduate student in engineering, used 3D printing technology to develop a robot capable of performing delicate surgery. It is reported that this robotic robot will be demonstrated this month at the Fluid Power Innovation and Research Conference in Nashville.

David Comber, Eric Barth

The development of a robotic robot project is now under test and Eric Barth, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering, hopes to put the surgical robot in clinical application within 10 years. The robotic robot is specifically designed to perform brain surgery for epilepsy patients. Some parts are printed from 3D printers.

At present, the treatment of epilepsy patients with more drugs, but this can only control the epilepsy temporarily unable to attack and can not fundamentally treat epilepsy. In this case, the patient needs to be operated on, and the robotic robot is officially used for clinical surgery in patients with epilepsy and excises a part of the human brain.

Surgical robot

It is reported that the surgical robot consists of a variety of materials, the use of shape memory alloy needle surgery. The needle can deform and "remember" its original shape, returning to its original shape when heated.

Written in the back: 3D printing technology is well used in the medical field, 3D printing is more demanding precision instruments or parts of medical equipment in terms of clinical medicine is very beneficial. At present, there are many applications of 3D printing technology in the medical field, such as 3D printed human organs and 3D printing auxiliary medical equipment. I hope 3D printing technology in the field of medicine can have a more extensive use, but also hope that the surgical robot as soon as possible in clinical surgery to get a better, more extensive use.
