Recently, I was tasked with measuring six chilled water coils for replacement at a hospital in Florida. As I examined the existing units, I was taken aback to find that all six had been installed as left-hand coils. However, three of them should have been right-hand coils. This was a critical mistake that could have affected the entire HVAC system's performance.

Proper installation of chilled water coils is essential, especially in environments like hospitals where indoor air quality and system efficiency are paramount. A mismatched coil can lead to reduced airflow, lower cooling capacity, and higher energy consumption.

In this case, the incorrect orientation caused a 2-3% efficiency loss per row of the coil. With six rows, that meant a potential 12-15% drop in overall system efficiency. Over time, this inefficiency translates into increased energy costs and a less comfortable environment for patients and staff.

Luckily, I caught the error before the replacement coils were ordered. I made sure the correct-handed coils were installed, ensuring the system would perform at its best.
