Site Bite: Fixing Improperly Installed Chilled Water Coils

During a recent visit to one of the hospitals we service in Florida, I was tasked with measuring six chilled water coils for replacement. As I reviewed the existing units, I was taken aback to find that all six had been installed as left-hand coils—when in fact, three of them should have been right-hand coils.

This kind of mistake can have serious consequences, especially in critical environments like hospitals where HVAC performance directly impacts patient comfort and safety. The wrong coil orientation not only affects airflow but also reduces the unit’s capacity and overall efficiency.

Each row of a chilled water coil can lead to a 2-3% efficiency loss if installed incorrectly. With a six-row system, this could add up to a potential 15% loss in efficiency over time. That means higher energy costs, reduced cooling capacity, and unnecessary wear on the system.

Luckily, I caught the error during my inspection and ensured that the correct, right-hand coils were installed. It's a simple fix, but one that makes a big difference in performance and long-term savings.

That’s why it’s so important to work with an experienced commercial coil company like Nationwide Coils. We understand the nuances of proper installation and make sure you get the right coil every time—so you can focus on what matters most: getting the job done right.
