MABAS Division 24 news

Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com:

A groundbreaking development has taken place in the south suburbs of Chicago, as a group of fire departments recently launched the region’s first firefighter candidate testing center. This initiative marks a significant move toward aligning local hiring procedures with national standards, offering a more efficient and fair process for aspiring firefighters.

The testing center is a joint effort between MABAS 24, which represents 20 fire departments in southern Cook County, and the National Testing Network, a leading pre-employment testing service. The facility is located at Division 24 headquarters in Homewood, making it easily accessible for candidates who previously had to travel long distances—sometimes across state lines—to take the nationally recognized Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT).

This new center not only offers convenience but also aims to bring consistency to the hiring process. Historically, each department or fire protection district created its own physical ability tests, leading to inconsistencies and even legal challenges. For example, the city of Chicago faced lawsuits over allegations that its tests were discriminatory.

The CPAT, now available at the Homewood location, is widely accepted as a legally sound and non-discriminatory test. It is endorsed by both the International Association of Fire Fighters and the International Association of Fire Chiefs. The test consists of eight job-specific tasks, such as dragging a hose, raising a ladder, and performing a search and rescue maneuver—all within a time limit of 10 minutes and 20 seconds.

Those interested in becoming firefighters can register online for the CPAT at the Homewood site for $125. The fee includes a training packet and access to orientation sessions where candidates can practice the eight events in person. Additionally, two timed practice runs are available for $39 each, helping candidates prepare effectively.

The CPAT is valid for one year and is designed for entry-level firefighters looking to start their careers. Because it is standardized and recognized nationwide, passing the test allows candidates to apply for positions in multiple departments across the country without the need for repeated testing.

Initially, the Homewood facility will host two testing sessions per month, with plans to increase to three times a week if demand rises. Beyond firefighter testing, the center will also offer computer-based assessments for law enforcement officers, corrections officers, and emergency communications professionals.

All revenue generated from the testing center will be used to repay the $70,000 investment made by MABAS 24 to purchase the specialized equipment needed for the program. This initiative not only streamlines the hiring process but also sets a new benchmark for fairness and efficiency in firefighter recruitment in the region.
