Glenview Engine 8

The newly assigned Pierce Arrow XT engine to Glenview Engine 8 earlier this year brings some notable differences compared to the previous Enforcer models used for Engines 6 and 7. One of the most apparent changes is the heavier cab/chassis of the Arrow XT, which provides a more robust structure than its predecessors. Another significant difference lies in the front bumper; while the older models came with chrome bumpers, Engine 8 was equipped with a stronger steel bumper. The body design of Engine 8 marks another major shift. It features a taller and deeper body with a 'rescue-style' configuration, allowing for more extensive storage options. The first compartment includes a slide-out tool board, making it easier to access essential equipment. The rear compartment houses an entire suite of hydraulic extrication tools, while 'coffin-style' compartments accessible from the top of the body store cord reels for hydraulic tools and hazardous materials (haz-mat) supplies. As the first response haz-mat unit in the area, Engine 8 works alongside Truck 14 for extrication incidents. Unlike Engines 6, 7, and 13, which only carry 'combi-tools' for minor pin-ins, Engine 8 and Truck 14 have a full range of specialized tools. Glenview is currently exploring the possibility of purchasing two additional engines. One will follow the standard body design, while the other will mimic the unique 'rescue-style' setup of Engine 8. However, this second engine will not be configured for haz-mat operations. Instead, it will focus on carrying resources for technical rescue missions. The rear of Engine 8 showcases the depth of its right-side compartments and complies with NFPA standards, featuring a rear chevron for enhanced visibility. Inside, the deeper compartments enable the use of a slide-out tool board, improving accessibility to necessary tools and equipment. Engine 8, along with Truck 14 and the remaining engines, serves as part of the village-wide response system for extrication incidents. These updates reflect Glenview's commitment to enhancing its emergency response capabilities, ensuring that firefighters have the best tools available to handle a wide range of situations effectively. With these new additions, the department aims to provide faster and more efficient responses to emergencies, ultimately contributing to safer communities. While Engine 8 sets a high standard for modern firefighting equipment, the introduction of two more engines signifies Glenview's ongoing efforts to upgrade its fleet. These changes underscore the importance of adaptability and innovation in maintaining a reliable and capable emergency response system.
