4 Bolt Flange Bearings: What You Should Know

Understanding 4 Bolt Flange Bearings: A Comprehensive Guide

Posted by on

If you work with heavy machinery, chances are you’ll encounter the need for a 4 Bolt Flange Bearing. If you’re thinking about purchasing these bearings, it’s essential to understand some key aspects beforehand.

An Overview of 4 Bolt Flange Bearings

  • What is a 4 Bolt Flange Bearing?: As the name suggests, a 4 bolt flange bearing is a bearing mounted within a square or circular flange, secured by four bolts. These bearings typically adjust or align themselves to match the length of the shaft they support.
  • Material of the Housing: The bearing housing can be made from various materials, each with distinct properties. Cast iron, familiar to those acquainted with kitchen utensils, primarily consists of natural materials like iron, along with small amounts of silicon and carbon. The heating process determines its characteristics. Pressed steel is low-carbon steel formed through pressing rather than machining. Plastic or thermoplastic materials refer to organic or synthetic materials that are flexible when heated and brittle when cooled, including materials like nylon and Teflon. Stainless steel is resistant to chemicals and corrosion and has high-pressure ratings.
  • Material of the Bearings: The choice of material affects the bearing's performance and durability. Aluminum offers resistance to wear, supports heavy loads, and is an excellent heat conductor. It’s commonly used in connecting rods and bearings in internal combustion engines. Steel, containing iron and carbon alloy up to 1.7%, is often used in high-carbon steel forms, which are malleable under specific conditions. Steel differs from cast iron due to its lower carbon content. Stainless steel resists chemicals and corrosion and has high-pressure capabilities. Powdered-metal bearings are cost-effective and self-lubricating, consisting of porous bronze and copper alloys that absorb oil, graphite, or PTFE. While they aren’t ideal for heavy loads, they are useful when lubrication is a concern. Graphite-metal alloy bearings are self-lubricating and created by melting graphite with metal. Plastic bearings, as described earlier, are strong and durable, requiring no lubrication and suitable for various applications due to their ability to handle significant weight.
  • Applications: 4 bolt flange bearings are used for rotary or linear motion when the bearing mount is perpendicular to the shaft. They come in 2, 3, and 4 bolt designs, with the 4 bolt version designed for heavier loads. When choosing a bearing, consider the shaft's size and height. The shaft's maximum diameter or the bearing's diameter is crucial, and the height above the mounting area matters if low clearance is necessary.
  • Performance Considerations: Speed is a significant factor, determining how fast the bearing can operate before failure occurs. Bearing life refers to the lifespan during which the bearing operates reliably at 90% efficiency, measured as L10. Bearing loads involve the radial and thrust forces it must endure. Engineering load describes the forces acting on the shaft, such as weight, belt tension, and unbalanced loads. Operating temperature impacts the bearing cage, seal, and grease, particularly at high temperatures.
  • Lubrication Needs: All ball bearings require lubrication, whether manually applied or self-lubricating. Manual lubrication involves using a pump or grease fitting to apply lubricant to the friction points. Self-lubricating bearings either don’t need lubrication due to their material composition or are manufactured using base metals like bronze that absorb oil naturally.
