Historic fire: Goldblatt’s fire in Mt Prospect, 1977 (pt2)

On a bitterly cold Sunday in February 1977, Larry Shapiro captured a series of powerful images from the 4th Alarm Goldblatt’s fire in Mount Prospect. These photographs offer a rare glimpse into the intense firefighting efforts that took place under extreme weather conditions. The first image shows an American LaFrance Aero Chief Snorkel at the scene, highlighting the massive scale of the operation. The second and third photos feature the Glenbrook Fire Protection District's Pierce Snorkel, positioned at the rear of the store. These shots emphasize the teamwork and coordination between different fire departments responding to the emergency. One photo reveals a canvas tarp used to shield parts of the fire truck from the freezing water spray—a practical yet telling detail of the harsh conditions. Another image captures the Glenbrook Snorkel alongside two Mount Prospect engines, both painted in their original yellow and white colors, offering a nostalgic look at the department's history. A final shot includes a note about the Glenbrook FPD, which was a recent name change for the Glenview Rural FPD, as seen on the Snorkel boom. These photos not only document a significant event but also preserve the legacy of the brave firefighters who worked tirelessly that day.
