Commercial building fire in Des Plaines, 12/29/17
On December 29, 2017, the Des Plaines Fire Department was called to a commercial fire at Car-X Muffler, located at 1108 E. Oakton. The incident occurred just half a mile from Station 62. Upon arrival, Engine 62 reported a fire and immediately launched an interior attack. Within minutes, flames were visible from two sides of the building and through the roof, prompting an immediate switch to an exterior attack.
As the situation escalated, both Des Plaines tower ladders were deployed, and the fire was upgraded to a working fire. Shortly after, the B-sector wall collapsed, causing part of the roof to fall as well. In response, a MABAS Box Alarm was activated, bringing in additional units to support the operation.
Park Ridge Tower Ladder 36 was dispatched to the rear of the structure, where it provided a third elevated master stream, supplied by a Rosemont engine. The scene quickly became a multi-agency response with numerous units on hand.
A full list of Des Plaines units present included Engine 61, 62, 63, Tower 61, 63, Ambulances 61, 62, 63, Battalion 61, 6100, and 6101. Mutual aid units from surrounding areas also arrived, including Park Ridge Tower 36 and Ambulance 36, Rosemont Engine 156, Glenview Engine 8, North Maine Engine 1, Elk Grove Township Engine 11, Schiller Park Tower 5 and Battalion 5, Morton Grove Quint 4, Skokie Tower 16, Northbrook Ambulance 10, Wheeling Ambulance 24, a warming bus from Mount Prospect, and Elk Grove Ambulance 7.
Several onlookers were present at the scene, and this is the first of several posts covering the event. More photos are available at Shapirophotography.net.
