A major collision occurred yesterday morning on Route 41, northbound, just north of Route 176. An over-the-road tractor-trailer rear-ended another semi-truck, causing significant damage and trapping one of the drivers inside. The crash happened directly in front of the Knollwood Fire Station, and it appears that the second driver failed to notice the first truck slowing down. The driver of the first truck was unharmed, but the second driver remained stuck for nearly an hour while crews from Knollwood, Lake Bluff, North Chicago, and Great Lakes Fire Departments worked together to rescue him. Firefighters used specialized tools to cut through the cab and create enough space to safely extract the injured man. Tim Olk was on the scene and captured several powerful images of the incident. His photos show the intensity of the operation, including firefighters using saws to open up the truck's cab and attaching chains to pull the dashboard away from the trapped driver.

After the rescue, the driver was taken to Condell Hospital by paramedics from Lake Forest. Several fire departments contributed to the effort, with Lake Bluff’s Squad 520 playing a key role in providing the necessary equipment for the extrication.
