Precipitated Titanium Dioxide Waste Acid Sulfuric Acid Success

A new technology using the titanium white waste acid to produce sulfuric acid - precipitation process, is expected to solve the titanium dioxide industry's long-standing outstanding environmental problems. On October 25th, Jiangxi Tianguang Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. successfully separated and recovered the titanium white waste acid samples using this process, and obtained qualified products. According to reports, the process not only achieves the objectives of non-discharge of recycled titanium dioxide production wastewater, zero consumption of sulfuric acid recycling, but also the by-production of iron salt or iron oxide red.

The new process, key technologies and equipment developed by the former senior engineer Zhang Zhixin of the Nanchang Institute of Industrial Technology have undergone industrial tests and can be applied to the acid production process of titanium white waste acid.

According to Li Yidong, chief engineer of the national titanium dioxide industry and chief engineer of Jiangxi Tianguang Chemical Co., Ltd., in the production of titanium dioxide in the sulfuric acid process, for each ton of titanium dioxide produced, high-titanium slag is used as raw material, and about 2.5 tons of sulfuric acid is consumed; Iron ore is a raw material and requires 4 tons of acid; when the two materials are used in combination, the acid consumption is about 3.5 tons. At the same time, the production of 1 ton of titanium dioxide also produces 6 tons of sulfuric acid waste solution with a concentration of about 20%. The waste liquid has a large quantity and contains more metal sulfate. According to statistics from the National Titanium Divided Center, the domestic titanium dioxide production capacity in 2007 has reached 1.3 million tons, and a huge amount of waste acid is in urgent need of applicable governance and comprehensive utilization techniques.

At present, the domestic and foreign countries generally adopt a multi-stage concentration and separation concentration process for the waste acid solution, and eventually obtain a concentration of about 68% of sulfuric acid reuse. Li Yidong told reporters that the use of this process will be concentrated 1 ton of 20% acid to 68%, the cost of at least 300 to 400 yuan. Moreover, the concentration method cannot be continuously produced and the steam consumption is high, and it is still very difficult to apply it to actual production.

The newly developed precipitation process employs a recyclable precipitant that is added to the spent acid to form an insoluble sulphate or iron hydroxide. The sulfate and iron ions in the spent acid are precipitated separately. Recyclable water, sulfate and iron hydroxides were isolated. The resulting sulphate can be decomposed into sulphur trioxide and absorbed to a concentration of 98% sulphuric acid; iron hydroxides can be processed into iron salts or higher value iron oxide reds as required.

The precipitation method does not consume other raw materials and has low energy consumption. It produces 1 ton of 98% sulfuric acid, consumes about 0.3 tons of coal, and consumes 1 to 2 tons of water. The precipitation method basically achieved the recycling of sulfuric acid in the production of titanium dioxide.
