PHFD Mourns Loss of Former Deputy Chief Ron Olsen

Ron Olsen, a former deputy chief of the Prospect Heights Fire District and the father of Battalion Chief Scott Olsen, passed away on Wednesday, November 8.

Ron began his career with the PHFD in 1962 and served with dedication until retiring as deputy chief in 1988. After his first retirement, he continued to serve part-time as a fire inspector, contributing his expertise until 2015 when he retired for a second time.

During the first major expansion of the original fire station in the early 1970s, Ron was heavily involved in the masonry work and other essential details. In the 2000s, he also played a key role in two major masonry repairs at the station, helping save the district both time and money.

Ron’s long and devoted service to the PHFD and the community of Prospect Heights left a lasting impact. His contributions were deeply valued, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Ronald J. Olsen, 79, of Grayslake, previously of Prospect Heights, was born on October 24, 1938, in Chicago, to Harry and Bertha (née Torkilsen) Olsen. He passed away on November 7, 2017. Ron was a retired Deputy Chief of the Prospect Heights Fire Protection District, a 50-year member of D.C. Crieger Masonic Lodge #81 AF & AM, and a Past Patron of the Arlington Heights Chapter of the Eastern Star. He was the beloved husband of Lorraine L. (née Weiss) Olsen, and the loving father of Kimberly (Richard, Lt. MPFD) Christensen, Scott (Georgette) Olsen, and Brigette (Daniel Schley) Miksch. He was also a cherished grandfather to many, including Emily (Tony) Thompson, Brent Fergus, Jenna Christensen, Jacob Christensen, Nicole Olsen, Megan Olsen, Steven Miksch, Victoria Miksch, and Breeanna Schley. He is survived by his brothers Robert Olsen, Richard (Ruth) Olsen, Kenneth (Debbie) Olsen, Jerry (Danila) Olsen, and Laura Olsen, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 10, 2017, from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Lauterburg & Oehler Funeral Home, 2000 E. Northwest Highway, Arlington Heights. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, November 11, at 10:30 AM. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society are encouraged.
