PHFD Mourns Loss of Former Deputy Chief Ron Olsen

Ron Olsen, a former deputy chief of the Prospect Heights Fire District and father of Battalion Chief Scott Olsen, passed away on Wednesday, November 8, 2017. He was 79 years old.

Ron began his career with the PHFD in 1962 and served for over two decades before retiring as deputy chief in 1988. After retirement, he continued to contribute by working part-time as a fire inspector, eventually retiring for a second time in 2015. His dedication to public service never wavered, even after leaving active duty.

During the early 1970s, when the original fire station was expanded, Ron played a key role in the masonry work and other construction details. In the 2000s, he again stepped in to assist with major masonry repairs at the station, helping the district save both time and money. His hands-on contributions were invaluable to the district’s operations.

Ronald J. Olsen was born on October 24, 1938, in Chicago to Harry and Bertha (Torkilsen) Olsen. He lived in Grayslake, but had deep roots in Prospect Heights. A lifelong member of the D.C. Crieger Masonic Lodge #81 AF & AM, he also served as Past Patron of the Arlington Heights Chapter of the Eastern Star. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle.

Ron is survived by his wife Lorraine, children Kimberly, Scott, and Brigette, and numerous grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched during his long and meaningful service to the community.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 10, 2017, from 3–9 PM at Lauterburg & Oehler Funeral Home, 2000 E. Northwest Highway, Arlington Heights. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, November 11, at 10:30 AM. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society are suggested.
