Knollwood Fire Department news
Hey everyone,
I just came across this interesting piece on createsend.com. It's about a letter that many residents recently found in their mailboxes. The letter is titled "Save the Knollwood Fire Department," and it raises some concerns about the future of our local fire department. So, is there really a threat, and can the petition mentioned in the letter make a difference?
As Knollwood Neighbors, our goal has always been to keep you informed about matters that could impact your community. However, we remain neutral and don't tell you how to vote or what to support. With that in mind, here’s what the letter says:
First off, the current situation is that the three trustees of the Rockland Fire Protection District aren’t elected by us but are instead appointed by the Lake County Board President. This means we don’t have a direct say in who represents us. However, this can be changed through a legal process that involves gathering signatures for a petition and then holding a referendum.
Secondly, due to a recent state law, the county board now has the authority to dissolve the Rockland Fire Protection District. If this happens, we’d still have to pay taxes for fire services, but the county would outsource these services to other departments. This would mean losing any local control over our fire services.
Thirdly, if the Rockland Fire Protection District board were to become an elected body, it would no longer be subject to that part of the law. As a result, the district couldn’t be dissolved by the county board’s decision.
The petition referenced in the letter aims to get a referendum on the April ballot, where voters will decide if they want to transition to an elected board. To do this, the petition needs signatures from 10% of the registered voters within the district.
This letter and the associated petition drive are the joint efforts of a group of concerned residents who want to ensure that our fire department remains under local control.
