This is from Larry Shapiro: The Wheeling Fire Department was called to a house fire at 40 Versailles Court just before 8:30 PM on Wednesday, January 26, 2022. The initial response included Glencoe Squad 30, Des Plaines Engine 61, Buffalo Grove Tower 25, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods FPD Battalion 51, Mount Prospect Battalion 3, Arlington Heights Ambulance 2, Wheeling Squad 24, and both Wheeling ambulances. However, most of the Wheeling units, including chief officers, were already on scene at a separate house fire in neighboring Prospect Heights, just over a mile away. Prospect Heights crews would have also been part of the first alarm with Wheeling units. Des Plaines and Glencoe had been covering from Wheeling stations. As the Prospect Heights fire was being brought under control, command decided to reassign some units. A Wheeling engine, chief officers, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Squad 51 were sent to assist with the Wheeling fire. Squad 24 arrived first and initially reported no visible flames. Upon approaching the home on foot, they noticed heavy smoke coming from the structure and managed to locate a hydrant in the cul-de-sac. The situation was upgraded to a working fire, prompting additional resources, including Mount Prospect Engine 14, North Maine Engine 1, and Wheeling Battalion 24, who had just cleared the Prospect Heights incident. Firefighters discovered a basement fire that was quickly extinguished. However, the fire had spread above the basement into the first floor, creating a hazard for interior crews. The entire house was filled with thick smoke, requiring extensive ventilation efforts to ensure the safety of all personnel involved.
