Historic fire: Goldblatt’s fire in Mt Prospect, 1977 (pt2)

On a bitterly cold Sunday in February 1977, Larry Shapiro captured powerful images of the fire at Goldblatt’s in Mount Prospect, showcasing the intense efforts of firefighters battling the blaze under extreme conditions. The photos highlight the use of specialized equipment, including snorkel trucks from both Mount Prospect and Glenbrook Fire Departments. One image shows an American LaFrance Aero Chief Snorkel in action, while another captures a Pierce Snorkel from Glenbrook FPD working at the rear of the store. These units were essential in reaching high areas and controlling the fire. Due to the freezing temperatures, a canvas tarp was used to protect parts of the equipment from water spray that quickly turned to ice. The photos also reveal the historical colors of the fire engines—yellow and white—showcasing the older fleet that once served the community. Notably, Glenbrook FPD had recently changed its name from Glenview Rural FPD, as seen on one of the trucks. These images not only document a significant event but also preserve the legacy of the brave firefighters who responded to the emergency.
