Chicago 4-11 Alarm Fire 12-29-12 (pt 2)

Second article covering the 4-11 alarm fire that took place on Saturday at 2444 W. 21st Place in Chicago. This piece features images captured by Larry Shapiro, who arrived at the scene after most of the other photographers and reporters had already left following the initial incident. Larry's photos provide a unique perspective on the ongoing situation several hours into the fire. The first image shows the aftermath of the roof and upper floors collapsing, with intense flames concentrated on the ground level. Another photo captures Engine 26 positioned at the corner of 21st Street and Western Avenue, while a third highlights thick black smoke engulfing the sky as the fire continues to burn through the building’s eastern section. Further images depict emergency vehicles such as Engine 28, which was supplying water to Engine 103 from the 2300 block of Cullerton Street. Others show Engines 18 and 5 operating in-line to supply master streams from Sector 3, and Tower Ladder 10 receiving water from Engine 35. A Snorkel unit, known as 6-6-1, was quickly dispatched to assist, and a Command Van was set up on Western Avenue to coordinate efforts. One particularly striking shot shows the gas company working to shut off the gas supply by digging under the street, as a gas-fed fire rages in Sector 1. These images offer a powerful visual account of the challenges faced by firefighters and the scale of the destruction. Larry has shared a full gallery of his photos here.
