US scientists to develop new car LCD display can withstand extreme cold

Indian media The Free Press Journal reported that U.S. scientists have developed a new liquid crystal mixture for the manufacture of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) for vehicles that work exceptionally hot and cold.

LCD monitors are mainly used in cars to display speed, mileage, gasoline consumption and GPS maps. In addition, it can be used for the manufacture of camera and audio system. The traditional liquid crystal mixture manufacturing technology has many shortcomings. The liquid crystal display based on the traditional technology can become faint and run slowly under extreme temperature conditions. The study, completed by researchers at the University of Central Florida (UCF), can solve these problems.

Professor Wu Shi-tsung, from the University of Florida's School of Optics and Photonics, said: "The liquid crystal exists only within a certain temperature range. To make it work in extreme environments, we need to expand its temperature tolerance range." In this context, The university researchers prepared several new temperature-limited liquid crystal mixtures. These liquid crystal mixtures can continue to work well in environments up to 100 degrees Celsius or as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius. In addition, the response speed and brightness change of displays using such liquid crystal mixtures can be achieved in less than 10 milliseconds and the image remains clear, about 20 times faster than the European car standard requires.
