New technology converts plastics into oil

The disposal of plastics is a major problem in the world. In 2012, only about 32 million tons of plastic waste was produced in the United States, and only about 9% of plastics were recycled. This is because of the increasing use of non-recyclable plastics, which are mainly made of polystyrene and polypropylene. These plastics enter landfills, where they accumulate and are difficult to decompose. As a result, landfill space has become an increasing concern.
However, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are now processing the end of the plastic landfill system to convert non-recyclable plastics into oil and gas. "Plastics come from oil, so it makes sense to convert it back to usable fuel," said the project's principal. “Our goal is to end the landfilling of waste plastics, not only at home but also globally.”
They use a so-called “continuous” system, in a process called catalytic depolymerization, in which the heat and catalyst decompose the plastic and convert it into crude oil for sale to the refinery. About 70% to 80% of the product becomes oil. About 10% to 20% becomes the hydrocarbon gas of the heating system, and the rest is char residue. Last year, the first full-scale commercial plant, the Rocky Mountain Recycling Plant, was established and installed in Salt Lake City, Utah's largest recycling plant. Under continuous operating conditions, the plant can handle up to 10 tons of plastic, and every day plastic produces 60 barrels of oil and achieve zero emissions.
