More than half of respondents believe that robots will take over most of human work in 30 years

According to a survey conducted by the Brookings Institute's researchers on the Internet, 52% of respondents believe that within 30 years robots will enter the stage where most of the current human activities can be completed. The public opinion survey also found that 29% to 32% of people are positive about whether the US government should establish a Federal Robotics Commission to manage the development and use of robots.

The survey was conducted by researchers at the Brookings Institution in an online US poll and surveyed 2021 adult Internet users from June 4 to June 6, 2018. The survey was supervised by Darrell M.West, who is vice president of management research and director of the Center for Technology Innovation at the Brookings Institution. He is also the future work: Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, and Automation (TheFutureofWork: Robots, AI, and Automation). The author of the book.

The survey feedback matched national online demographic data by weighting gender, age, and geographic factors, based on the current census data of the U.S. Census Bureau.

Will robots take over human activities?

The survey asked about the possibility of robots taking over most human activities in the next 30 years. 19% of respondents think this is very likely, 33% think this is somewhat possible, 23% think this is unlikely, 25% said it is uncertain.

There are no significant differences in terms of population area factors. People 35 to 54 years of age are more likely to believe this is more likely than adults who live in the South or under 35 years of age. Men and older people are the people who are most likely to say that this is unlikely.

Federal Robot Committee

Thirty-two percent believe that the U.S. government should set up a federal robots committee to manage the development and use of robots. Opponents account for 29%, and 39% are uncertain.

However, there are some differences in age and region. Young people between the ages of 18 and 34 are most willing to support robot surveillance (39%), and so do people living in the northeast or west. Male users, seniors, and people living in the South have the least support for robotic supervision.

Comfort and fear of robots

We asked several questions about people’s impression of robots. Sixty-one percent of respondents said they were uncomfortable with robots, while only 16% of respondents said they were comfortable with robots and 23% were unsure.

38% believe that robots will make their lives easier in the next 5 years, while 17% think their lives will become more difficult, 45% do not know.

When asked about their concerns about robots, 61% said they were not harmed, while 29% expressed concern and 22% were uncertain.

When asked about the popularity of robots in the next five years, 13% said it was very common, 32% said it was universal, 26% thought they would not be very common, and 29% said they did not know.

Robot type of interest

We asked about the types of robots that people are interested in. 20% of people are interested in house sweeping robots, 17% want robots to provide security services for families, and only 9% are interested in robots that can help care for children or the elderly.

How much do you pay for a robot?

The survey asked how much people would pay for robots that handle everyday tasks. 42% said they would pay $250 or less, 10% said they paid between $251 and $500, 3% said they would pay $501 and $750, and 3% said they paid $751 to $1,000 Between, 3% said they are willing to pay more than 1,000 US dollars. 39% did not provide figures.

Age will bring about some differences. Compared with people aged 55 or over (37%), young people under 35 are more interested (at 47%) in relatively cheap robots that cost less than $250.
