Glenview FD building new fire station headquarters

The TribLocal recently published an article highlighting concerns from Glenview trustees regarding the escalating costs of the new fire department headquarters station 6. The project, which is set to replace an old police station at 1215 Waukegan Road, has sparked debate over budget overruns and design choices. Originally, the building was expected to cost around $5.44 million. However, during a recent village meeting, developers warned that the final price could increase by approximately 15%, adding about $816,000 to the original estimate. This increase is due to additional architectural features and expansions recommended by officials in previous discussions. The new fire station is necessary because a four-story development currently under construction has forced one of the existing stations out of its location at 1815 Glenview Road. Until the new station is completed, a temporary facility has been operating at the intersection of Glenview Road and Roosevelt Avenue since early spring. Village trustees approved the conditional use ordinance, site review, and preliminary subdivision approval for the project on October 1. Construction fences were recently installed, signaling the start of demolition work on the former police station. However, the final budget won't be confirmed until a November trustees meeting, which may delay the project by a few months beyond the original target of June or July 2014. Some trustees have questioned whether the expanded design—adding roughly $375,000 to the total—was truly necessary, expressing a desire to stay within the original budget. Trustee Deborah Karton emphasized the importance of the building’s aesthetic appeal, noting that officials had spent significant time developing a vision for the downtown area. Fire Chief Wayne Globerger explained that the expansion, which includes three extra bunks and an additional half bay, is meant to ensure the station can handle future scenarios, including the potential consolidation of Fire Station 13. He stressed the need for functionality, while also acknowledging that the building's appearance has become a point of discussion. There are ongoing conversations about relocating the village campus near the newly built Glenview Police Department headquarters at 2500 E. Lake Ave. This idea could influence the exterior design of the fire station. Currently, the village hall doesn’t match the aesthetic vision of downtown Glenview, and officials are considering how much “fancy” the fire station should look. “We’re trying to get pricing both ways,” Globerger said. “The question is how fancy do they want the outside of the fire station to look?” For more information, check out previous coverage on the new fire station here, here, and here.
