Glenview FD building new fire station headquarters

The TribLocal recently published an article highlighting concerns from Glenview trustees regarding the escalating costs of the new fire department headquarters, Station 6, located on Waukegan Road in the village's downtown area.

Initially, officials projected the project to cost around $5.44 million. However, during a recent village meeting, developers warned that the final price could increase by approximately 15%, adding about $816,000 to the budget. This increase is due to additional design elements and expansions that were recommended by officials in previous discussions.

The new fire station will be built on the site of the former police station. It is necessary because a four-story development currently under construction has forced one of the village’s existing fire stations out of its original location at 1815 Glenview Road. Until the new station is completed, a temporary fire station has been operating at the intersection of Glenview Road and Roosevelt Avenue since early spring.

Village trustees approved the conditional use ordinance, final site review, and preliminary subdivision approval for the fire station on October 1st. Construction fences have already been erected around the site, signaling the start of demolition work on the old police building. However, the final budget isn’t expected to be set until a November trustees meeting. Because of this delay, Fire Chief Wayne Globerger expects the project to be delayed by a few months, pushing the completion date from the original target of June or July 2014 to later in the year.

Some trustees have raised questions about the need for the expanded space, which added about $375,000 to the project. They expressed a desire to stay within the original budget. Trustee Deborah Karton emphasized the importance of the building’s appearance, noting that officials had spent significant time developing a vision for how the downtown area should look.

Fire Chief Globerger stressed that functionality is his top priority. He explained that the expanded space—featuring three extra bunks and an additional half bay—will help the department better prepare for various future scenarios, including the possibility of merging with Fire Station 13.

The issue of the building’s “street appeal” is also influencing the overall cost. There have been discussions among village officials about potentially relocating the village campus near the newly constructed Glenview Police Department headquarters at 2500 E. Lake Ave. While this idea is still being considered, it could impact the exterior design of the fire station.

Currently, the village hall doesn’t align with the trustees’ vision for the downtown aesthetic. “We’re trying to get pricing both ways,” Globerger said. “The question is how fancy do they want the outside of the fire station to look?”
