Algeria, Pakistan will jointly build a phosphate fertilizer project

According to recent reports by foreign media, the state-owned mining company Ferphos of Algeria and Engro Chemicals of Pakistan will jointly establish a joint project on phosphates in southern Afghanistan.

It is reported that the construction cost of the Phosphorus Fertilizer Complex will be between 1 billion and 1.5 billion U.S. dollars. The entire project will be constructed in three phases. The first phase of the project is scheduled to be completed and put into operation in 2011. It is mainly composed of a sulfuric acid plant with a capacity of 4,500 tons/day, a phosphoric acid plant with a capacity of 1,500 tons/day (calculated as P2O5), and a diammonium phosphate (DAP) plant with a capacity of 3,000 tons/day. In the composition, the sulfuric acid device and the phosphoric acid device mainly supply raw materials for the DAP device. The project is most likely to be built in Gelema, 250 km east of Algiers, the capital of Algeria. However, the exact address is still uncertain.

The second phase of the project is planned to be completed in 2012, and two sets of sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid plants of similar scale to the first phase will be built. The third phase of the project will build a sulfuric acid plant with a capacity of 4,500 tons/day and a phosphoric acid plant with a capacity of 1,500 tons/day (in P2O5) and an NPK fertilizer plant with a capacity of 1,000 tons/day. Tiehu Mining Group expects the project will be completed in 2013. It is said that most of the products produced by the project will be exported.

Ingenol Chemicals will take up the majority of the shares in the joint venture project. For Ingenol, participation in the construction of the project can increase its fertilizer product types and production. The company's current fertilizer products are mainly urea and NPK compound fertilizers. At present, Ingono imports DAP and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (MAP) each year to meet the needs of the Pakistani market. The company stated that as long as it has its own production base, it is able to guarantee supply even if it is overseas and domestic demand for DAP increases.
