West suburban firefighters help wounded US Army veteran

MySuburbanLife.com recently shared a touching story about Geneva firefighters supporting a local veteran. The article highlights the efforts of the Associated Firefighters of Illinois, Geneva Local 4287, who are providing a much-needed vehicle to U.S. Army Specialist Joshua Kerber, a 26-year-old from West Chicago.

Kerber, who lost his left arm during a combat mission in Afghanistan in 2009, shared his story with the Geneva City Council. He explained that he joined the Army in 2008 after realizing he needed education but couldn’t afford it. "The Army had always been something on the back burner," he said. "I had family that served, and it seemed like a good option at the time."

The incident that changed his life happened during a routine security operation when his convoy was attacked by rocket-propelled grenades. Kerber, who was the gunner on the lead vehicle, described the moment: "I went down. I stood up and tried to return fire. The second hit – there was no getting back up after that one." He suffered shrapnel wounds throughout his body, and though his right arm is injured, it doesn't have nerve damage. "Don’t feel bad for my left arm—it was useless anyway," he said with a mix of humor and strength.

During the event, Kerber was surrounded by Geneva firefighters and union members Kevin Swanson, Rod Johnson, and Dave Lentz, all wearing black T-shirts supporting their fundraising campaign. Johnson, the vice president of the local, explained the origins of the Warrior Program, a statewide initiative that has provided seven vehicles to wounded Illinois veterans over the past six years.

"We started this program in June and said, 'We’re not just going to sell a few shirts—we're going to sell $30,000 worth of shirts and find someone in need to give them a vehicle,'" Johnson said. The group partnered with local businesses like the Kane County Cougars, Firehouse Pizza and Grill, and Old Towne Pub to raise funds. So far, they've sold around 2,500 shirts at $20 each, with all proceeds going toward purchasing a new car for a veteran.

Although the Geneva local took the lead, other nearby fire departments, including West Chicago, Batavia, Elburn, and St. Charles, are also involved in the effort. Kerber chose a brand-new 2014 red Ford F-150, which Fox Valley Ford helped secure at a great discount. The team plans to purchase the vehicle this week with him.

The presentation will take place on Friday at Fifth Third Ball Park, where Kerber will throw out the first pitch. After the game, the vehicle will be officially handed over to him on the field before the fireworks show, marking a memorable day for a brave service member.

Thanks Dan
