China's light truck export mode needs to be transformed

“As China’s local auto market expands rapidly, the time for the large-scale export of Chinese autos has matured in the future.” At the recent China High-Tech Summit on Light Trucks and Scientific Development for 50 Years, Zhang Xiaokai, Chairman of the China Association of Automotive Engineers, analyzed Chinese autos Industrial export prospects.

He believes that none of the major auto exporters have been able to support the large domestic market. The proportion of self-owned brands in the light-duty truck industry in China is as high as 95%, and the scale of production exceeds one million. It has become an important support for the light-card industry to go to sea. Under the globalized development situation, China's light-duty truck industry should shift from opportunistic exports to strategic exports as soon as possible.

Export highlights continue

China's auto vehicle exports have maintained a high growth rate for four consecutive years. According to the latest customs statistics, in 2007, China exported 193,000 light trucks of less than 5 tons, which accounted for 77.8% of the export volume of trucks, and accounted for nearly 1/3 of the total exports of automobiles.

In recent years, China’s light truck companies have actively explored overseas markets. In 2005, they leapt to sign contracts to export 200 million U.S. dollars to Russia, setting a record for the largest export of light trucks. In October of the same year, Dongfeng signed another 6,000 light truck export orders at the ASEAN Expo; In August, Foton Ao Ling signed 3,000 export orders from Europe and created the largest single export volume of light trucks in China.

Zhang Xiaolu believes that when it comes to light truck exports, there are two major issues that must be mentioned. First, the Yuejin brand incorporates Nanjing Iveco, and has directly obtained Iveco's perfect overseas marketing network; Second, Foton Motors is located in Russia, Indonesia, Iran, and the Philippines. CKD factories in several countries are currently negotiating and planning. "From the product export, the integration of joint ventures, and the establishment of overseas plants, the overall sea-going pattern of the light truck industry is gradually taking shape."

"To the sea" to explore

The export situation is excellent, but it cannot hide the problems. It is understood that the areas currently exported by China's light trucks are still concentrated in the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. The economy of these regions is in a period of rapid development and there is a large market space. Zhou Weili, general manager of Nanjing Iveco, pointed out: “Because the purchasing power of users in these areas is not strong, and the product quality requirements are not high, China’s light trucks are easy to enter the market with cost-effective advantages”.

A set of data validates Zhou Liang's point of view. In recent years, the average growth rate of the light-duty card market in the Middle East has reached 30%, while the increase in the European and American markets during the same period was only 3%. In Russia, another major area where trucks are exported, Russia has adopted stricter entry standards for commercial vehicles in China this year, including the strict implementation of Euro III testing, and the increase of truck safety inspections from 2 to 9, etc. As a result, China’s exports of trucks fell by 26.26% in January from the previous month.

At the same time, with the development of countries such as India, Vietnam and Indonesia, the cost advantage of the Chinese market is weakening. It is understood that since 2005, Isuzu and Honda have successively transferred their pickup truck production bases to Thailand. In 2006, Hyundai Motor also put into production Mighty trucks in Malaysia. Even Chinese companies have begun to focus on the lower cost of Southeast Asia. SAIC-GM-Wuling has been investigating the Vietnamese market in recent years.

“Simple low-cost advantages cannot sustain sustained competitiveness. Many of China’s passenger vehicles, like Geely and Brilliance, have started to deploy in the European market. Light trucks now have a strong domestic market to rely on, and they should make breakthroughs in exports. "Zhang Xiaoyu said.

South steam model attracts attention

Among the group of Chinese light trucks that collectively “goes to the sea”, the model of Nanjing Auto attracted particular attention. Zhou Liang told reporters that after the integration of Yuejin's brand into Iveco, Iveco's technology will leap forward and enhance the quality of Yuejin. At the same time, through the integration of supply chain, sales network and Other resources, Leaping will maintain its low cost advantage while gaining Iveco's overseas. Channel resources. Italy Iveco not only does not set limits on the Yuejin brand's exports, but will also leap forward as the main force to enter the global second- and third-tier markets.

In January this year, leap into the European Union offline, which is the first new product introduced after the leap into the Iveco brand. "The Yuejin brand has been reborn with Iveco's technical support," said Deng Xiaohai, executive vice president of Nanjing Iveco. Nanjing Iveco's gene reorganization of Yuejin has achieved initial results. The next step is to develop new products on the Iveco platform. , making Yuejin a veritable Iveco product and going global.
