Chicago Fireboat update

Dan McInerney from the Oak Park and Countryside Fire Departments shared a link to the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) website, which highlights the progress of their new fireboat. This update is part of an ongoing effort to modernize the city's water-based emergency response capabilities.

The following details were taken from the CFD website:

The Chicago Fire Department is replacing its 60-year-old fireboat, the *Victor L. Schlaeger*, with a brand-new NFPA Type III Fireboat. This state-of-the-art vessel will be designed for year-round operations in Lake Michigan, the Chicago River, and surrounding harbors. It will serve multiple roles, including firefighting, rescue missions, CBRNE incident response, hazmat decontamination, dive operations, and other waterway-related emergencies.
Construction Progress (6/11/2010)
As of June 11, 2010, construction on the Chicago Fireboat is proceeding as planned. The main hull structure has been largely completed, and the hull plating has been installed. Meanwhile, the aluminum deckhouse is being assembled in parallel with the hull.
Construction Progress (3/1/2010)
Work on the fireboat officially began in February 2010. Steel sections for the hull have already arrived at the shipyard, and the structural assembly of the boat is currently underway.
Contract Award (8/3/2009)
On June 20, 2009, the City of Chicago awarded a contract to Hike Metal Products for the construction of an NFPA Type III Fireboat. Construction was set to begin in 2010, with delivery expected by 2011.
