Chicago Fireboat update

Dan McInerney from the Oak Park and Countryside Fire Departments shared a link to the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) website, which highlights the progress of the new CFD fireboat. This is an exciting development for the city’s emergency response capabilities.

The following details are taken from the official update:

The Chicago Fire Department is replacing its 60-year-old fireboat, the Victor L. Schlaeger, with a brand-new NFPA Type III Fireboat. This state-of-the-art vessel will be capable of operating year-round in Lake Michigan, the Chicago River, and surrounding harbors. It will serve multiple purposes, including firefighting, rescue operations, handling CBRNE threats, hazmat decontamination, dive operations, and other water-based emergencies.
Construction Progress – June 11, 2010
As of June 2010, construction on the Chicago Fireboat is proceeding on schedule. The majority of the hull structure has been assembled, and the hull plating is now in place. Meanwhile, the aluminum deckhouse is being built in parallel with the hull.
Construction Progress – March 1, 2010
Construction officially began in February 2010. The steel sections for the hull have already arrived at the shipyard, and the structural framework is currently being assembled.
Contract Award – August 3, 2009
On June 20, 2009, the City of Chicago awarded the contract to Hike Metal Products for the design and construction of the new NFPA Type III Fireboat. Construction was set to begin in 2010, with delivery expected by 2011.
