Chicago FD Turret Wagon History (pt 18)

Another installment in the history of turret wagons within the Chicago Fire Department, brought to you by Jack Connors. The images showcase "Big Mo," a notable unit that saw two different chassis throughout its service life. Initially assigned as 6-7-2, it was mounted on a 1953 International 6×6 chassis and painted black over red. This version carried shop number G-248. Later, it was re-mounted onto a 1957 GMC 6×6 chassis, now sporting the blue and white colors associated with Civil Defense, and was assigned shop number G-157. The photos featured here are from Jack’s personal collection, along with contributions from Ken Little and George Brown, offering a unique glimpse into the past. Each image captures Big Mo in various settings, from emergency scenes to parades and routine operations. One photo shows Big Mo responding to a 5-11 Alarm fire in June 1969 at 14th and Indiana, with special units on scene. Another highlights the original 1953 International chassis, built by CFD shops. A third captures Big Mo at Engine 13’s station, while another shows the first version of the wagon at 66th and State. There's also an image of Big Mo in the fire prevention week parade in October 1970, and several more showing the unit at Engine 42 and other locations. One shot, taken by Ken Little, features the second version of Big Mo at an unknown fire scene. These photographs not only document the evolution of this iconic vehicle but also serve as a tribute to the men and women of the Chicago Fire Department who operated it. The previous post in this series is HERE. An earlier post showing Big Mo 6-7-2 is HERE.
