A new type of mine rock pressure sensor successfully tested in South Africa

A new type of mine rock pressure sensor has been successfully tested in South Africa. This is the world's first sensing device designed for mine safety. The new sensor will greatly improve the safety factor of mining.
Rock collapse is one of the main causes of mine accidents. As the mining work progresses, the depth of the mine is deeper and deeper, and the deepening of the mine depth will directly lead to changes in the rock tension of the top and side, when the pressure increases. To a certain extent, there is a rock collapse.
For a long time, the main method to solve rock collapse is to use the mine support to physically reinforce the rock mass collapse. However, as time goes by and the depth of the mine changes, the top and side rock stresses of the mine will be affected due to downhole vibration. Great changes have taken place. Traditional methods cannot determine the rock stress, which leads to insufficient reinforcement in some weak links. Rock collapse in mines still occurs.
The new rock pressure sensing device developed by the Mintec Mining Research Institute in South Africa in cooperation with the South African Mining Safety Research Council is made of a metal alloy that can sense changes in rock tension and convert this change into magnetic changes and ultrasonic changes. Thereby the change in rock tension is measured. This sensor can be directly mounted on the metal fixture of the mine and has anti-corrosion properties, which can be directly applied to the humid environment, which is very convenient. Mine safety inspectors can regularly detect the signals from the sensors, find out where the mine rocks may collapse, and take preventive measures in advance to reduce the risk of collapse in the mine and reduce the occurrence of downhole accidents.
The new sensing device is currently undergoing final testing and is expected to be widely used in South African mines soon.
